Guests this week: Cathy Sorbo, Ngaio Bealum & Tom Sawyer.
This week's edition of Copeland's Corner, with panelists Tom Sawyer, Cathy Sorbo, and Ngaio Bealum, opened with a lively discussion of comedian Shane Gillis's controversial SNL monologue, where he made remarks about women's gym attire that sparked backlash for misogyny, alongside an accidental on-air F-bomb. The panel debated what makes comedy endure, contrasting comedians like Richard Pryor, George Carlin, and Bill Hicks, whose material still holds up, with others like Sam Kinison and Gallagher, whose work was seen as more tied to its era. Tom Sawyer shared stories from booking comedians at Cobb's Comedy Club, including a memorable two-week run by Sam Kinison, while ngaio argued that modern audiences and algorithms favor spontaneous crowd work over polished, well-crafted jokes.
The conversation then shifted to politics and current events, covering midterm election polling pointing to a potential "blue wave," a Texas Senate race, and a federal raid on Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's Washington D.C. residence over decades-old immigration allegations, which the panel characterized as politically motivated optics rather than substantive legal action. Economic topics included rising inflation and gas prices, with blame largely placed on Trump's tariffs and policy decisions, as well as a widely criticized briefing by new press secretary Katie Zachariah, who claimed to be a corporate lawyer despite no verifiable bar record. The episode also touched on San Francisco's decision to replace its school lottery system with neighborhood-based assignments, raising concerns about educational equity, and closed with lighter banter about declining hobbies like stamp collecting, ham radio, and classic car restoration, plus personal stories of "lying their way" into jobs, including Cathy's auctioneer gig and Ngaio's early road comedy career
